The study was conducted in four phases: During Phase I, we reviewed the current literature on trends in the health and functional status of the elderly, the likely effects of new medical advances and treatments on morbidity and mortality among the elderly, and the likely costs of new medical treatments. We also reviewed past efforts to model the effects of changes in health status, risk factors, and treatments on health care expenditures. During Phase II, we convened technical expert panels TEPs ; to provide guidance on the likely future of advances in the medical treatment of specific illnesses and the early detection and prevention of diseases. Most of these panels consisted of physicians or biomedical researchers with expertise in the domains of cardiovascular disease, biology, cancer, neurology, or geriatrics. View that all free granules have been shed as such by lateral loops is probably unjustified. Doubtless the smallest free granules, up to 1 diameter, are formed upon and shed by the lateral loops; but the larger the granule the less plausible the suggestion that it originated directly from a locus on a lampbrush chromosome. The facts which bear upon this problem are these. Oocyte nuclei from gonadotrophin-treated newts rarely contain granules of more than 1 fM diameter. The largest free granules that I have seen were in the oocyte nuclei of newts which had survived hypophysectomy for more than one month. Whenever lampbrush chromosomes are smothered in attached granules there are many free granules in the nuclear sap, yet the converse does not always hold. In some gonadotrophin-treated newts large refractile granules were bunched around the axial granule loci of chromosome I; free granules of comparable size and appearance lay near by, yet the remainder of the nuclear sap was clear. In one gonadotrophin-treated newt there were swarms of free granules in the immediate neighbourhood of the giant loops on chromosome X, but not elsewhere. Most 'normal' lateral loops carry minute granules which are often barely visible with the light microscope. In my opinion, these granules are regularly shed into the nuclear sap where, under normal conditions, they dissolve and their material passes into the cytoplasm. Now let us suppose that there is a fall in the rate at which protein is being synthesized in the cytoplasm. The transfer of materials from the nucleus to cytoplasm might slow down but, for a time, metabolic activity in the nucleus might well remain unchanged. The products of lateral loop synthesis would then accumulate in the nucleus. Each loop would continue to shed its granules, but these would not disperse and dissolve. Instead, a kind of accretion of gene products might take place as a result of which granules would become larger and fewer. According to this scheme, granules are not a permanent feature of oocyte nuclei and large numbers of free granules or large free granules are characteristic of nuclei whose anabolism is not in balance with the synthetic processes occurring in other parts of the cell. On the other hand, when an oocyte as a whole is intensely active metabolically, large masses of granular material may be shed from a certain locus so rapidly that a zone of saturation forms in the neighbourhood of that locus. Newly shed granules would have to escape from this zone before they could dissolve in the nuclear sap. Thus I account for the large numbers of free granules which were occasionally found among the chromosomes in oocyte nuclei of gonadotrophin-treated newts, and for the bunching of granules at the axial granule loci of chromosome I. I would stress here that only once have I seen evidence to suggest that granules or large lumps of material can detach from the giant loops of T. c. carnifex, and indeed the morphological variability at these loci points to the fact that in T. c. carnifex the giant loops cannot regulate their size by shedding matrix. No doubt the situation is different in T. c. cristatus and in T. viridescensz0 where it seems that large bodies are regularly shed from giant loop-like structures on the lampbrush chromosomes and phenazopyridine.

Viruses play an important role in the life of plankton populations. Phytoplankton are at the base of both the food web and the microbial loop in the oceanic ecosystem. Consequently, the viruses that infect them are likely to significantly affect the structure, function and biogeochemical cycling of marine food webs. Emiliania huxleyi, a marine microalga that forms dense blooms in coastal and mid-ocean waters, is an important species with respect to past and present marine primary productivity, sediment formation and climate. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of the calcium-binding protein GPA ; and the major capsid protein MCP ; genes to reveal significant sequence variation between E. huxleyi and their virus EhV ; strains. New denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis DGGE ; and sequencing primers, now available, have allowed us to check the dynamics by studying the composition of host and virus genotypes during the blooms. In the current study we have monitored the progression of three different blooms of E. huxleyi; a natural bloom in the North Sea in June 1999 and two induced blooms in seawater enclosures off western Norway in June 2000 and 2003. In addition to the genotypic analysis, flow cytometry FCM ; , was used count the E. huxleyi and virus communities. Host and viral communities were more diverse and dynamic in the North Sea than in the induced experiments, and they showed temporal and depth variations. During the mesocosms we observed different bloom dynamics but yet the same community of host and viruses. Only 2 virus genotypes dominated during the E. huxleyi crash in the mesocosms. This suggests that only those were responsible for the termination of the bloom.
Many studies have been made from various points of view on the development of resistance to various antitumor drugs in experimental tu mors. However, studies on morphological aspects are few. One of the present authors reported that no significant difference was observed with regard to either ascitic properties or histological features between the original strains and sublines resistant to alkylating agents of the Yoshida ascites sar coma or the ascites hepatoma AH 13, which are both composed of single, free tumor cells. On the other hand, AH 7974, which is composed of cell aggregates and single isolated tumor cells, showed a significant difference in both ascitic properties and histological features between the original strain and a resistant subline 5, 6 ; . Recent studies with the electron microscope have con tributed greatly to our knowledge of the fine structure of cell components and have led to a better understanding of their functional signifi cance. It is of interest to compare the fine structure of both the sensitive and resistant tumor cells in and phenelzine.

Today Jean-Louis produces some half-dozen wines in the region of Libourne on the Right Bank. Two wines from the 2005 vintage impressed me in particular. 2005 Chteau Croix de Rambeau, Lussac St-Emilion .99 ; Made mostly of merlot, this inexpensive Bordeaux is so immediately likeable it's like meeting an old friend. Simply raising a glass brings a smile to your face. 2005 Clos de la Vielle Eglise, Pomerol .99 ; A classic Pomerol and Trocard's most serious effort. The property, two parcels totaling a mere 1.5 hectares, has been in the family since the early 1800s. The soil is clay and gravel with iron subsoil, the so-called crasse de fer for which Pomerol is famous. Aged for 20 months in 100% new oak barrels, you would never know it. The fruit is dark, intense, deep and powerful. This may be the property's finest wine yet, and one that will continue to reap rewards in the cellar for many years to come. Chteau La Cour d'Argent is another Right Bank winner. The grapes come from twin properties on either side of the Dordogne, south and west of St-Emilion, planted mostly to merlot with the remainder split between cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. The mouthfilling fruit that is the hallmark of the 2005 vintage .99; 1.5L .99 ; overshadows the astonishing structure found even at this level. Robert Parker calls this wine a "sleeper of the vintage, " but you don't have to be a lawyer from Maryland to recognize value when you see it.
